[China Glass Network] The production of glass requires high temperatures and consumes a lot of energy. Thanks to the new technology, the energy required for the central production of special glass – the refining process – can be reduced by 40%.

The Ministry of Information of the Beijing Institute of Nuclear Engineering introduced this concept. The core of this process is a crucible made of high temperature resistant metal crucible that can withstand high temperatures without cooling.

Unwanted impurities in the molten glass are removed during the refining process. The glass melt was heated to 1600 ° C in a crucible to remove air bubbles therein. Traditional copper gongs require cooling in this process.

The newly developed crucible can withstand temperatures up to 1750 °C. With an annual production capacity of 50 tons per furnace, it can save about 5,000 megawatt hours of electricity per year.

Currently, this method is only applicable to aluminosilicate glass. Researchers are working to apply this method to borosilicate glass. This more economical glass is used to make ovenware and laboratory glassware. The research project was carried out by Schott, a scientist in Mainz, Germany.
