Sri Lanka's textile sector is not affected by the reduction of the GSP

More than seven months after the European Union suspended its preferential trade agreement with Sri Lanka, it has little effect on the textile sector's goals, government officials said. The EU suspended the PTA due to the ** problem in Sri Lanka.

The vast majority of Sri Lanka’s 250,000 textile workers work 12 hours a day, work six days a week, and receive a monthly salary of US$ 150. These textile workers fear that the reduction of the GSP will make them unemployed. However, most of them are still in post.

According to the EU's GSP + plan, Sri Lanka received a 10% tax concession within 5 years, and textiles accounted for 65% of the country's total exports, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

However, Sri Lanka failed to prove its commitment to the three international conferences - the International Conference on Citizens and Power, the Anti-torture Conference and the Children's Rights Conference.

The EU hopes to send an investigator to Sri Lanka to investigate the situation of Sri Lanka’s violation of the situation. However, the Sri Lankan government rejected the EU’s request and led to the suspension of GSP concessions.
