Application of CPP Film for Food Packaging
January 04 Plastic Material Technology
CPP is a polypropylene (PP) film produced by the cast extrusion process in the plastics industry. This type of film is different from a BOPP (bidirectional polypropylene) film and is a non-oriented film. Strictly speaking, the CPP film only has some orientation in the machine direction (MD), mainly due to the process properties. By rapid cooling on a chill roll, excellent clarity and finish are formed on the film.

(a) The main characteristics of CPP film include:

- Compared with LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, PET, PVC and other films, the cost is lower and the yield is higher.

- Higher stiffness than PE film.

- Good barrier to moisture and odor.

- Versatile, it can be used as a composite base film.

- Can be metalized.

- As a food and product packaging and packaging, with excellent demonstration, the product can still be clearly visible under the package.

Although some PP films are produced by casting processes for use in the sanitary field or as synthetic papers containing fillers and other additives, the term CPP film generally refers to high-definition films that are suitable for applications such as lamination, metallization and packaging. .

(b) Current uses and potential uses

The current uses of CPP include: garments, knitwear and flower packaging bags; pouches; overpacks; document and photo album films; food packaging; and metallized films suitable for barrier packaging and decoration.

Potential uses include: blister packaging (replacement of PVC); food packaging; candy packaging (twist film); pharmaceutical packaging (infusion bags); replace PVC in photo albums, folders and documents; synthetic paper; self-adhesive tape Report cover; business card holder; ring folder and standing bag composite material.

CPP film has such a great attraction because of its low cost and its price advantage over PET, LLDPE, LDPE and other materials. Compared with LLDPE, a price difference of 5% to 10% plus a difference of 2% in density is an attraction. Furthermore, due to the inherently rapid cooling properties of cast films, excellent finish and clarity can be achieved. For packaging applications requiring higher definition, this feature makes PP films the material of choice. It can provide a transparent window to make the contents clearly visible, especially for the flexible packaging market. After corona treatment, it is easy to use a variety of processes for printing. This feature improves the final appearance of the film.

CPP has excellent heat resistance. Since the softening point of PP is about 140°C, this type of film can be used in hot filling, cooking bags, aseptic packaging and other fields. The combination of acid resistance, resistance to rubbing, and excellent grease resistance make it the material of choice for bread product packaging or laminates. Its food contact safety, excellent demonstration performance, will not affect the flavor of the interior food, and can choose different grades of resin to obtain the desired characteristics.

(III) Market Scale

According to CMAI estimates, the global demand for thermoplastics in 2001 was 135.7 million tons, and PP accounted for 22% of the total amount of polymers. Western Europe, North America, and Asia are the major consumers of polypropylene, accounting for 78% of global demand. Among them, only Japan, Southeast Asia, China and South Korea accounted for 39% of the global total demand for PP.

According to the forecast of the Freedonia Group, the US market research institute, by the year 2002, the total demand for PP films in the United States had an average annual growth rate of 4.5%, reaching 671,500 tons. However, most of the above films belong to BOPP films. Food packaging is expected to account for 85% of this demand. In the United States, CPP film is less popular than other regions, but recently it has also begun to expand its use in laminates. According to Borealis figures, the PP market in Western Europe is expected to reach 8.1 million tons. The market size of CPP film in 2003 is expected to reach 423,000 tons. The main application areas are laminated materials and food packaging.

Cast PP films, especially metallized grades, are extremely advantageous in the Asian food packaging market. For example, in 1997 Japan used up to 120,000 tons of CPP film.

In Latin America, CPP films have also begun to gain favor in the market and have become more widely used. According to the Freedonia Group's forecast, packaging PP reaches 400,000 tons.
For the future, the development trend of CPP film will be:

- Increased market share, market share of PVC, PS and PE decreased;

- Co-extrusion structures are used extensively in demanding applications;

- Improved sealing characteristics;

- Scaling and other processing problems can be solved;

- Increased productivity in film production, auxiliary operations and end-use applications;

- Enhanced metal adhesion;

- PP increases market share in non-traditional markets such as desserts, salads, frozen food can lids, fruit pulps, snacks, candy pouches, stripping structures, and kink films;

- As a low-cost alternative to BOPP film, it is a low cost alternative for breads, biscuits, pastas, and snacks.

2 organic antibacterial punishment film

1 Antibacterial mechanism

The main mechanism of action of organic antibacterial agents is to gradually enter the cells through binding to the surface of microbial cell membranes, or to react with groups such as sulfhydryl groups on the cell surface, destroy the synthesis system of proteins and cell membranes, and inhibit the proliferation of microorganisms.

Application of organic antibacterial film

Currently, TBZ (2-benzimidazole) produced by the United States Mike Company, OBPA (10,10, oxiratophenol oxime) produced by Akcros Chemical Company, IRGAGUARD produced by Ciba, etc. are all certified by the US FDA for food use. The packaged organic antibacterial agent can be added to the resin to make an antibacterial food packaging film.
